In a posh metro of India, an old man climbed into a bus, and looked around for a seat. A small boy dressed in his school uniform sat in a seat and didn’t bother to get up. He was busy listening to music on the cell phone. It didn’t matter to him whether the man stood or sat as long as he didn’t have to give up his seat. In the rural village, Pranesh was easing himself behind a tree and argued with his teacher when found. He didn’t think he was doing anything wrong at all. What has happened to the fabric of our society? Why are schools churning out young boys and girls who think they know best? What gives them the right to disrespect or question authority? Something definitely has gone wrong with the Indian school system.

On the one hand, schools have become sophisticated centers of advanced technology and development while on the other hand they have become weak in their moral fiber, and a centre for sloth, idleness, disrespect and rude language. From becoming schools that must focus on character development for life, the schools themselves have become institutes where bribery and corruption is rampant. India is a land associated with ancient learning and spiritual knowledge.

Though schools during the British Regime were established by Christian missionaries who implemented the Teachings of Christ into schools and brought in the marginalized into mainstream schools, much earlier schools like Nalanda, were the seat of higher learning and the wise in search of spiritual enlightenment flocked to it. But the education of then and now has a wide gap both apparently and innately. In the ancient days education involved a sacrifice as recorded in the historical Indian epic of the Mahabharatha where Guru Dronacharya the teacher of the art of archery asked young Eklavya to a sacrifice or token for his teaching in advance.

The latter was asked to give his thumb knowing fully well that the student wouldn’t be able to use the bow and arrow, but with all due respect, when his teacher asked, the student gave without any hesitation or thought for the self. The point is that in the ancient days, knowledge was associated with god and goddesses and it was a service to mankind if one was a teacher. The teacher through prayer and meditation taught students humility and service to fellow people. No wonder why phrases like work is worship and service to man is service to god cropped up in the Middle Ages. Followers of Saint Francis of Assisi, a 12th century Italian saint known for his love for nature and animals, exhibited extraordinary faith and humility in his poverty and practiced charity.

Today, some Schools established by the same order inculcate in their students sound moral values and reverence for people and teachers. Schools have been set up for the hearing impaired, the blind and juvenile delinquents with the aim of serving them humbly and the teachers are trained to handle such children with patience and love. But still, on the whole Parents don’t feel schools are humble Institutions anymore.
